Project Highlights

Qantas Chairmans Lounge - Sydney

After bringing the word ‘cool’ to the Qantas First Class lounges, Marc Newson is really down to business in the new Qantas Chairman’s Lounges.  With extensive use of the blue-black Fontainbleau Stone, it is easy to see these lounges are designed to deal with the no-nonsense upper echelon of business high flyers.  The Chairman’s is in contrast to the cool chic of First Class.   First impressions present the Chairman’s Lounge with a sober ambience; the subtle ‘pin stripe’ within the stone makes you feel as though you are wearing your best suit.

The main lounge area uses large format Fontainbleau Stone on the floor and walls.  The food service counters are also carved from the same stone producing the characteristic ‘Newson curve’. Fontainbleau Stone also stars within the toilet and shower rooms where it is used on the floor, walls, vanities and shower pans.

The lounge is not all ‘black tie’.  The judicious use of lime green accessories and fixtures give areas of the lounge a subtle funky feel.  The use of timber handrails and wall panels tie the lounge with the wooden furniture and American oak panel dividers found in its first class sister lounges.

Stone Initiatives acted as stone consultant on the Chairman’s Lounge project.  The comprehensive testing program included fitness for purpose testing as well as selection of a suitable sealer system and evaluation of the slip resistance for the various locations throughout the lounge.
