Project Highlights

Qantas First Class Lounge - Sydney

Sleek, smooth and stylish - that describes the new Qantas First Class lounges in Sydney and Melbourne.  Designed by Marc Newson, these lounges imbue five-star quality the moment you walk in the door.  Stone definitely steals the show here.  The extensive use of the finest Italian marble on the walls, floor and counter tops greets you with a mixture of understated timeless luxury and contemporary style.

The main lounge area uses large format polished Statuario Venato tiles on the floor and walls, while the individual bathrooms are fitted out top to bottom with Bianco Carrara – even the shower pans are carved from a single piece of stone.

As stone consultant on the project, Stone Initiatives was commissioned to carry out an initial evaluation of the stone to ensure fitness for purpose.  An extensive physical testing program was carried out to confirm its suitability. The initial testing program was followed by an investigation to select a suitable sealer system that would improve the stain and etching resistance of the stone while not detracting from its appearance.  The use of polished Statuario Venato throughout the main Lounge posed special challenges with regards to stain and slip resistance.  A special three-part sealing system was selected to reduce water and oil-based stain absorption.  The final product provides additional protection from surface etching while also improving the dry slip resistance of the surface.

The minimalist appearance of the marble in the Lounges is balanced with the use of earthy fabrics, fine woollen carpets and wooden furniture including specially designed American oak panel dividers.  Overall, this is a project that is definitely first class!
